A FRUITFUL TREE

The Life & Legacy of Rod & LeNeve Kimball

To truly know the lives of Rod and LeNeve Kimball, one must understand the following:

DEVOTION TO THE CHURCH

Their lives, values, and beliefs centered upon the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Church"). This history will assume that readers are familiar with the doctrine, principles, practices, culture, and history of the Church.

THE SAVIOR

The central role of Jesus Christ and that through the enabling power of the atonement, we have to power to overcome both sin and death. That we lived before we were born and that this life serves a sacred and eternal purpose for each individual.

ETERNAL FAMILIES

Through covenants and ordinances, family bonds extend into eternity. One of the greatest responsibilities given to man and woman by God is to rear the family in righteousness. That death is merely the separation of the spirit from the mortal body, that those who have died yet live and will, in time, be resurrected.

Through obedience and faithfulness to the covenants, the bonds of matrimony may be eternal, and the family may be together forever.

Preface

PERSPECTIVE

In reviewing the life stories of another, it's important to do so from the perspective that they lived their lives in the present, which was in our past. We know what the end result was of the experiences that we read, but they lived their lives in their present, not knowing what would follow. As alluded to before, they should not be thought of as dead. They are very much alive and are, in particular, very mindful of their posterity.

As you explore the lives of Rod and LeNeve Kimball (and the lives of our posterity), consider the context in which they lived their lives. Elder David A. Bednar, in his talk "The Spirit of Revelation," shares how revelation can come to us in two ways: as a sudden, intense burst of inspiration or as a gradual, incremental increase of understanding.

Just as the dawn gradually replaces the night, Rod and LeNeve's lives were illuminated by the steady guidance of the Holy Ghost, shaping their decisions and actions over time. This gradual revelation helped them navigate their daily challenges with faith and resilience, trusting in the Lord's timing and wisdom.

As we reflect on their stories, remember that they lived each moment without the hindsight we possess, making their unwavering faith and dedication to the gospel even more remarkable. Their lives were deeply influenced by their commitment to follow the promptings of the Spirit, which provided them with the necessary light to guide their steps and inspire their posterity.

Ancestral Roots

FOUNDATIONS OF FAITH & FORTITUDE

Rod and LeNeve Kimball's ancestral roots trace back to stalwarts of faith and pioneers of perseverance, weaving a rich heritage that deeply influenced their life's work and spiritual journey.

Among these notable forebears were Heber C. Kimball, an original apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a fearless pioneer, and David P. Kimball, celebrated for his daring rescues during the perilous Willie Martin Handcart Expedition. These figures not only shaped the early trajectory of the LDS Church through their bold missions and unwavering testimonies but also instilled a legacy of devout service and resilience.

As Rod and LeNeve passed these stories and values onto their children, the ancestral past was not merely a record of history but a living legacy pulsating through their everyday lives. Their commitment to the principles cherished by their ancestors manifested in their service to the Church, their community, and their profound influence on future generations.

Thus, the Kimball legacy, rooted in the faith and fortitude of pioneers, continues to flourish, demonstrating that the values and convictions of the past could dynamically shape and inspire the present and future. This enduring connection to their heritage highlights how the deep-seated faith and courage of their ancestors laid the foundation for a legacy that would reach far beyond their own lifetimes, continuing to impact lives within and outside their immediate family.

Rod’s Mission

Rod's mission to Germany marked a pivotal period in his spiritual development and commitment to his faith. In the early 1930s, he embarked on this transformative journey, leaving behind the familiar landscapes of Utah for the foreign streets of Germany.

His mission came during the Depression, at a time of considerable economic and political unrest in Germany, providing Rod with a backdrop that tested and deepened his faith and resilience.

While serving, Rod devoted himself to service and teaching, engaging with local communities and sharing the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The challenges of language barriers and cultural differences were significant, but they also served as growth opportunities for Rod, enhancing his skills in communication, empathy, and leadership. His mission experiences helped shape his understanding of the world, broadening his perspectives and reinforcing his commitment to service and ministry.

This formative experience was not just about spiritual teaching but also about personal trials and triumphs. Rod returned from Germany with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the principles of his faith. His mission laid the groundwork for his lifelong dedication to serving his family and others, both within his community and in his later professional work at Brigham Young University.

The lessons he learned and the relationships he formed during this time remained a fundamental part of his character throughout his life.

Teaching the Gospel

Rod's personal growth and deepening of faith during his mission in Germany were particularly profound due to the challenges and experiences he encountered.

One specific instance that exemplified this was his approach to the difficult task of teaching and spreading the gospel in a pre-World War II environment where skepticism and hardship were prevalent. Rod often found himself in conversations with individuals who were grappling with loss and disillusionment, which required him to develop a deeper empathy and a more profound understanding of the gospel's comforting power.

Another pivotal moment came when Rod faced significant health challenges due to the harsh winters and limited resources. Despite these physical hardships, his commitment to his mission did not waver. Instead, these challenges deepened his reliance on prayer and his faith in divine guidance. These experiences taught him the importance of resilience and trust in God's plan, principles that he carried throughout his life.

Additionally, Rod's spiritual growth was catalyzed by the responsibility of leading discussions and services in areas where the Church was not well-established. This responsibility forced him to dive deeper into the scriptures and the teachings of the Church, enhancing his knowledge and his ability to teach others effectively. His mission not only fortified his testimony but also transformed him into a more capable and compassionate leader, teacher, and servant of the Lord.
